What is a hand-poked tattoo?

Hand-poked tattoos are just tattoos made without the use of a machine! The require all the same tools and it's a very similar process - the needle is simply hand-held instead of mechanized.

Where do hand-pokes come from?

I have head a lot of people say, "prison!". But no, not prison! A single needle and ink used to tattoo has been used across the world, often to connect to community and religion. Hand-pokes have been dated as far back as ancient Egypt, where mummies have been found to have intricate tattoos. So cool!

Are hand-poked tattoos painful?

Yes - depending on the placement, just like any tattoo - there will be some pain involved because ink needs to be poked into the dermis. The lack of machine is often more gentle and reduces the pain felt, especially if the design is small! Large designs, or solid black/color will mean more poking, which hurts a bit more.

Do hand-poked tattoos fade quickly?

No, no more than a machine-tattoo would. The length of your tattoo's life is completely dependent on how well you take care of it! Slap that SPF and moisturizer on!

Why choose handpoking?

Hand-poking is often considered to be a more gentle and relaxing form of tattooing. It takes a bit longer than using a machine since every bit of ink needs to be pushed by hand, but the healing time is generally faster, with less swelling and scabbing involved. And my favorite part; no machine buzzing!

How do I book a tattoo with you?

You can book a tattoo with me through this link:

https://www.battytatty.ca/customrequest

and I’ll get back to you within 3-5 business days!

What is a “custom” or a “flash” piece?

A flash piece is a design that I’ve made up on my own, and a custom is a tattoo design that I create for you based on the details you share with me. Flash pieces are either repeatable or non-repeatable, meaning i’ll either tattoo the design multiple times (usually a max of 3) or i’ll only tattoo the design for one person. Custom pieces are always a one-of-a-kind design, made with our collab efforts!

What is a deposit?

A deposit is a fee that is required to secure your place in the schedule. Your deposit total will be removed from the cost of your tattoo when payment is due at the end of your appointment.

  • Deposits can only be applied to one design and can not be carried over between designs.

  • Deposits are nonrefundable.

  • You must give 24hr notice to reschedule an appointment to keep your deposit applied unless you are unwell or unable to make the appointment due to bad weather.

Where are you located?

My cozy little studio at 42 St. Peters Road, Charlottetown, PE. I’m down the hall in suite 16. There are no stairs and there is a waiting room and washroom available. Please feel free to request anything that’ll make your experience at the studio more comfortable, including music or movie/show preferences!

How long have you been tattooing folks?

I've been tattooing since early 2018. I started off just tattooing myself and some friends, and quickly fell in love with it. I've been tattooing very consistently (at least twice a week) since December 2021, and opened the battytatty studio in 2022!

Will you tattoo another artist's design?

Only with proof of permission. If you have found a design that you'd love to have on your body, you can definitely ask the artist who created the design. If they approve, just send me proof and a link to their profile/page so that they can be accredited! Some artists will sell you a “tattoo ticket” that allows you to bring the design to a tattoo artist. Tattoo tickets are totally neat!

What if I change my mind last-minute?

Don't worry! This is your body we're talking about. It's much better to be sure and comfortable with a decision concerning permanent body modification, please don't ever feel pressured into going through with anything that makes you feel uncomfortable! Design changes can be made - they might just require a re-booking to allow myself time to be fully prepared. Remember, never hesitate to ask questions or voice your feelings/concerns! No judgement here!

What should I expect during while getting my tattoo?

The length of your appointment time will depend on the size of the design, and I will usually be able to provide an estimate for how long each piece will take. It's usually between 2-4 hours. You can take a break any time you want - to stretch, have a snack, grab some fresh air, whatever you like.

Consent is important, so I will always ask before touching any part of you. Please let me know what your comfortability level is at any given time, I will never judge you or share anything you tell me.

When your tattoo is finished, I'll maybe snap a pic if you consent, bandage it up with a special tattoo film, and you'll be on your merry way!

Can I leave a review after getting my tattoo?

Definitely! Just email me with the subject specifying that you're leaving a review OR make a post on whatever socials you frequent, and spill the beans. I'd love to hear back from you!
